As online betting and gaming continue to expand across Africa, governments are updating gambling laws through reforms covering licensing, taxation, consumer protection, compliance and technology-enabled oversight. Recent developments in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Mauritius demonstrate the different regulatory approaches being adopted as jurisdictions respond to the growth of digital gambling.
Technology is also becoming an increasingly important part of regulatory oversight. Several jurisdictions are introducing electronic monitoring systems alongside Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) measures to strengthen compliance and regulatory reporting.
Speaking exclusively to SiGMA News, Roger Parkes, Director of Regulatory Affairs at Gaming Associates, said: “Experience has clearly shown time and again that a successful regime is based on well-thought-out and balanced licensing, products, taxation, regulation, technology, advertising, responsible gambling, and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) controls. African nations have the opportunity to adopt, adapt, and implement the best practices from more mature regulated markets, helping to fast-track their path to success.”
